Donations to The Royal British Legion now exceed £12m

The Royal British Legion is delighted to be supported by Coventry Building Society. In October 2015, the Coventry launched another Poppy Bond - the latest addition to the successful Poppy range which has helped raise over £12 million since 2008.

Every year since 2008 the Coventry has made a donation to The Royal British Legion based on how much members have saved in their Poppy accounts. When staff at the Coventry saw how their donations made a difference, they wanted to contribute more. That’s why they made The Royal British Legion their Corporate Charity in 2012. As well as the Poppy accounts, the Coventry now also provides supports through fundraising events and by volunteering staff time.

Mark Parsons, Chief Executive of the Coventry, said: "We’re delighted that we’ve been able to make such a contribution to the work of The Royal British Legion and proud that we’ve been able to help the Legion maintain its vital services to the Armed Forces community, including the Battle Back Centre (Lilleshall) which supports wounded, injured and sick Service personnel. We’re able to do this solely because of the support of our staff and members."

We are immensely proud of the highly successful affinity partnership we established between The Royal British Legion and Coventry Building Society. This relationship goes from strength to strength and is the most successful corporate partnership for both organisations.

Representatives of The Royal British Legion were invited to Coventry Building Society’s Annual General Meeting to receive a further donation cheque for over £1.7 million. The innovative range of Poppy Savings Accounts was first launched in 2008 and the donations generated by members investing in these excellent accounts have now reached a staggering £5 million in total.

The Royal British Legion's Director of National Events and Fundraising, Russell Thompson, said, "Coventry Building Society's support over the last 4 years had been tremendous. We are delighted to accept today’s donation of £1.7 million which will help pay for The Royal British Legion Battle Back Centre, a sports and adventure training facility to rehabilitate seriously injured Service personnel. The Legion has taken care of serving and ex-Service people and their families for 90 years and our welfare support is now more important than ever for the Afghanistan generation of the Armed Forces family. With over 160,000 welfare cases a year, every single donation helps the Legion carry out its invaluable work and stand shoulder to shoulder with all who serve."

David Harding, Chairman of the Coventry said: "We are delighted to have raised £5 million thanks to the support of our members over the last 4 years. The excellent work of The Royal British Legion is highly valued by our members and we are very proud to to be supporting The Battle Back Centres and the invaluable work they do."

Third Sector Business Charity Award

Our innovative Poppy savings products which raise money for The Poppy Appeal, won a prestigious Third Sector Business Charity Award this month. Following our entry submission, Coventry Building Society and The Royal British Legion were nominated as a finalist for the Affinity Marketing Award which recognises the use of a company's products or services to help a charity

The Poppy Bond stood out in a competitive category and was announced the winner at an awards night held in the Grosvenor House hotel in London and hosted by BBC news anchor man Huw Edwards.

Our partnership also received further acclaim in an article by Jeff Prestridge, Financial Editor of the Mail on Sunday in the MailOnline (see feature after Equitable article, half-way down the page).

Coventry poppy appeal donation

In 2009 Coventry Building Society introduced Poppy Save, a competitive easy access savings account, along with a two-year Poppy Bond, and both have been an outstanding success. These affinity products were also excellent news for The Legion’s Poppy Appeal which received a donation of £1.8 million, based on the amount invested.

The donation, made on 25th February, this year, brought the total raised by Poppy Bond/Save products to a staggering £3.4m, breaking all previous records. PTCM pioneered the very first joint fund-raising project between The Royal British Legion and the Coventry Building Society and is delighted that our initiative is bringing such unprecedented success.
